MORIA: LOW-POLY MODULAR DUNGEON

FULLY MODULAR GAME-READY
ENVIRONMENT & PLAYABLE LEVEL

This is a modular, low-poly, stylised dungeon environment & fully-playable level inspired by classic Dungeons & Dragons model sets and boxed games. It was designed as a functioning level capable of supporting gameplay for a third or first person RPG.

Much of the aesthetic design is inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's description of the Mines of Moria. The modular kit for this game environment was modeled in Maya 2018, textured using Substance Painter and set up as a playable level in Unreal Engine 4.

This piece went through multiple design stages. It was important to me that it functioned as both an eye-catching environment and a playable level. In the initial concept phase, I created a moodboard to inform the aesthetics of the environment. Following that, I developed a CAD plan and a gameplay plan to lay a foundation for my whitebox and demonstrate my design intentions.

I then began the process of whiteboxing my level in UE4, using my CAD plan as the basis for my design. I was careful to make sure that the whitebox was scaled correctly and permitted the player character enough room to navigate the environment as intended. Once complete, I 3D modeled a modular kit for the level in Maya, textured it in Substance Painter, and imported it into UE4. Finally, I reconstructed the level using the kit, added lighting and post-processing, and ensured it was game-ready.
